“If I do not leave Sunningdale soon, Sunningdale will be the end of me.”

Agatha Christie, to her friend

The life of Agatha Christie seemed quite wonderful. In 1912, she met a charming young soldier named Archibald Christie at a dance. Three months later, Archie proposed to her and she accepted. When World War I broke out in August 1914, Archie was sent to France, while Agatha later took on nurse duties.

On Christmas Eve of 1914, they got married at a church close to Archie’s parents’ home, while he was on leave. In 1922, the Christies, being a lovestruck happy couple traveled all over Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Canada, and Hawaii (while their little daughter Rosalind was in the care of Agatha’s mother).

The couple learned to surf in South Africa, and then flaunted their skills in Waikiki, Hawaii. They were two of the very first Britons to surf standing up.
