On 12th July 2014, Conrad Roy III took a walk with his golden retriever, Holly. He then went to Horseneck Beach in West Port, Massachusetts with his mother and sisters. He strolled along the beach with his mom and took his sisters to get icecream, before returning home. According to his family, he seemed hopeful, happy, and a little distracted by his phone.

At 6:30 P.M, Conrad drove to a Kmart parking lot in Fairhaven, Massachusetts. He rolled up the windows of his pickup truck and switched on a water pump powered by an engine. And as lethal carbon monoxide fumes filled the vehicle, he passed away.

Conrad was an athletic 18-year-old who graduated high school with a 3.88 GPA. He was offered a scholarship to study business at Fitchburg State University with his best friend. He regularly worked at his family’s marine salvage business, and he earned his captain’s license at 18.

He was a depressed young man who had social anxiety and had sought help from several mental health professionals. He met 17-year-old Michelle Carter while each had been visiting Florida in 2012. And from then on, they had an on-off…
